The suburban character, i.e. village structures, was preserved in some areas of Josefstadt until the beginning of the 20th century. However, the living conditions in these old buildings were sometimes catastrophic.
Many houses had Pawlatschen, these are the courtyard-side open (sometimes also glazed) corridors through which the single flats are accessible. Some of these houses have been preserved to this day in the 8th district.
